Fire Ring Ideas
Enjoy the outdoors on your patio or in your garden almost year-round with a fire ring. Fire rings keep a fire safely contained, and provide light, warmth and a source for cooking. Go beyond the typical circular design and consider a variety of shapes, sizes and construction materials to create your own unique fire ring. With an infinite number of designs to choose from, you have the freedom to be creative. Use firebricks to line the inner layer, allowing you to use virtually any type of decorative concrete or stone for the outer design. Does this Spark an idea?

Shape
-
Fire rings do not have to be a simple circular design. Create a fire ring that is round, square or rectangular. Round shapes are the most conversation-friendly because of the circular shape. Square shapes have a classier, more-decorative look but do not work well for large groups. Rectangular fire pits work well for large groups and can serve a dual purpose as a fire pit and decorative landscaping wall.
Material
-
Fire-proof your fire ring using firebrick and fire-proof grout, and then choose virtually any type of material for designing your fire ring. For a simple and cheap fire ring, purchase precast bowls that can be moved around. For a distinctive fire ring, choose your favorite material -- such as river rock, cement or tile. Create a finished look by using a glazed concrete or colored tile. For a more rustic appearance, use large boulders or river rock fitted with fireproof grout.

Size
-
Design your fire ring in any size you want. Created it above ground or below ground, depending on your preference. Consider the size of your location; for example, in small backyards small fire rings work best. For larger spaces, feel free to increase the size. Consider the purpose of the fire ring, whether it will be for entertaining or mostly for decoration. This will determine the size and height of your fire ring. Check your local building ordinances to make sure the size of your fire ring meets local standards.
Location
-
Fire rings are not exclusive to camp sites. Create a fire ring in your backyard as part of your patio, or further from the house, such as in your garden. The location will depend on how large of a space you have and how convenient you want it to the house. To create a more rustic feeling, the fire ring should be further from the house. For easy convenience to the kitchen, keep it close. Check your local building ordinances before you put in a fire ring to make sure you meet the requirements.
