Crafting lets kindergarten children use their creativity and imaginations while learning new skills. Use a variety of craft materials to create jack-o'-lanterns in class and at home. Introduce basic art techniques and build small motor skills while letting kindergarten kids have fun creating jack-o'-lanterns for Halloween and fall decoration.

  1. Garlands

    • Make decorative garlands to drape in front of windows or blackboards with construction paper, markers and yarn. Draw tall, skinny pumpkins as well as short, round ones in various sizes on orange construction paper, adding a long stem to the design. The stem needs to be long enough to fold over and hang from the yarn. Use markers to create different happy or scary faces, encouraging creativity for the shapes and sizes of features. Cut out the jack-o'-lantern faces, fold over the stems, and hang over a piece of yarn or cording draped across the room. For a classroom project, have kids put their names on their jack-o'-lantern.

    Masks

    • Create a jack-o'-lantern mask from a paper plate and yarn. Use a dinner-sized paper plate. Paint the back of the plate with orange tempera paint. Draw a face with crayons or markers. Encourage using a variety of shapes for the features and make silly or scary faces. Cut out the features using craft scissors. Punch a hole on the two sides of the face, at the edges of the plate, and thread a long piece of yarn through the hole to tie the mask onto the child's face. Alternatively, use an orange Styrofoam plate, usually available at Halloween, instead of painting a paper plate.

    Candles

    • Encourage recycling by using a glass jar in any size to make candle holders. Glue small torn pieces of orange tissue paper onto the outside of the jar with diluted white glue. Cut out jack-o'-lantern eyes, nose and mouth shapes from black construction paper and glue to the bottle. Place a battery-operated tea light candle inside. Kindergarten children will learn how to make features to fit the bottle they have and how the tissue paper is translucent against the glass.

    Stained Glass

    • Design a faux stained glass jack-o'-lantern to hang in the window and reflect the sunlight with clear, adhesive shelf liner paper. Use a cut square of orange and yellow tissue paper and black construction paper to create the stained glass and frame. Cut or tear strips of tissue into small squares and place them on the sticky side of the shelf liner paper in the shape of a jack-o'-lantern. Place another piece of self-adhesive paper on top. Cut out two identical pumpkin shapes from the black construction paper and cut out the inside to create a frame. Glue the two shapes to both sides of the shelf liner paper design and add a string or yarn to hang.
