Kitchen Curtain Ideas for a Large Picture Window
Because they are so large, picture windows can be a challenge to decorate, especially when they are in a kitchen. Picture windows often call for layers of sheers and draperies to balance their size, but full, formal draperies aren't something you'd normally want in a kitchen. You do have some pretty and appropriate options, however. Does this Spark an idea?

Lace Curtain Panels
-
Lace curtains are light, airy and charming, which is a common decorating objective for kitchens. They let in plenty of light but also provide privacy. Even when a large picture window is dressed in simple lace panels, the look remains casual and charming and does not look overly formal or heavy. Laces with a homespun look, such as cotton Battenburg lace or crochet, are especially appropriate in a kitchen. Tie them out of the way with a pretty ribbon when you'd like to enjoy the view.
Tab-top or Tie-top Panels
-
Simple panels that tie onto a curtain rod or hang on a rod with tabs are another option that won't overwhelm a kitchen or look too formal. Tabs offer a casual, simple look, while ties are more quaint and feminine, yet still kitchen-casual. Whether you choose prints, stripes or solids, simple fabrics such as cotton broadcloth, twill or sheeting work well. The ties or tabs allow you to easily slide the panels out of the way when you don't want the window covered.

Valances or Cornices With Sheers
-
Because they cover only the top portion of a window, valances and cornices offer the color, pattern and the softness of fabric without full, long drapes that may not be appropriate for kitchens. You can hang a valance or cornice on its own, or use sheers along with it to add privacy but still keep the overall look light and casual.
Cafe Curtains
-
Cafe curtains are often used on smaller windows, but there is nothing to stop you from gracing a picture window with their casual charm. Cafe curtains are short curtains that cover only the bottom half of a window. The top half can be left open, or you can add a matching valance across the top so that a middle portion of the window remains uncovered, which allows light in but covers the majority of the window for privacy.
Plantation Shutters With a Fabric Valance
-
Follow the lead of cafe curtains by keeping a middle portion of the window uncovered when you combine plantation shutters with a fabric valance. Install plantation shutters that cover only the bottom half of the window, and hang a pretty fabric valance across the top of the window. The fabric adds softness and pattern while the shutters add architectural interest and light control and are easily folded away from the window so you can enjoy the view.
