Ways to Meet People in NYC
New York City is a metropolis that offers culture, diversity and a multitude of day and night activities. This makes it an ideal place to meet new people. Whether you are looking to date or just find new friends, researching some of New York's organizations, clubs and events will help you find various places to socialize.
-
Volunteer
-
Volunteering may increase your chances of meeting people who have common interests. Many charitable organizations in NYC need volunteers. Choose a cause that is important or special to you, such as visiting sick children at a hospital, delivering meals to seniors or building houses for Habitat for Humanity. Research the Internet for organizations in the area that need the services you want to provide. New York Cares has many listings for volunteers in various fields. Attend one of the organization's orientations and a representative will assign you to a project.
Take a Class
-
Taking a class at one of New York's universities will not only help you increase your knowledge on a particular subject, but will also help you meet other students. Many universities, such as NYU, offer flexible class schedules so you can attend after work. If you don't want to pay for a full semester at a college, nonprofit organizations, such as Media Bistro and New York Open Center, offer one-day courses for various subjects. Or, check with the local library, which sometimes offers free courses.

Find a Hobby
-
Find a hobby that requires interacting with others. If you like to dance, take a salsa or ballroom class. Most studios offer open classes that do not require you to have a partner. Try a photography class to learn new tricks for using your camera. If you are athletic, join a bowling, tennis, baseball or basketball team. The NYC Social Sports Club, Zog Sports and Gotham Volleyball are a few of the many social clubs that have active sports teams.
Walk Around
-
You might be pleasantly surprised about how many different people you can meet just by walking around New York and visiting some of its attractions. Take a casual walk in Central Park. Or, if you have a dog, take it to the dog park. Other singes may be there, and talking about your pet is a good way to initiate conversation. Visit a museum and take time to enjoy the exhibits. Browse the aisles at a bookstore such as Barnes and Noble or Borders. Just by exploring the city, you will expose yourself to potential interactions with people that may also desire to meet someone.
