Choose your favorite animals for cookie decoration inspiration.

Whether you have a special event coming up or just want an excuse to bake some cute, tasty treats for your kids, decorated animal cookies will keep the crowd roaring for more. Use one specific animal for your cookie decoration inspiration, or include a variety of different animal designs on your serving platter for a whole circus of snacks. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Farm Animals

    • Create farm-inspired cookies to serve to your friends and family. Use cookie cutters to make pigs, cows, chickens and horses, and then decorate these using colored sugar, frosting and decorative candies. If you don't own cookie cutters, you could simply make round sugar cookies and then decorate each one to look like the particular animal's face; to make the snouts pop, use frosted marshmallows as cookie toppers. To really set the scene of a barnyard, bake some quick and easy haystack cookies, or whip up some crispy rice cereal squares to look like hay bales. Serve the haystacks interspersed with the animal cookies on a festive platter.

    Aquatic Animals

    • Celebrate underwater animals with a batch of creatively decorated cookies. Make sharks, whales and different varieties of fish and crustaceans for a smorgasbord of oceanic treats. Use cookie cutters to make the shape of your cookies, and then use colorful decorating materials like sprinkles and icing to fill in the details. Use items like red icing and red licorice to make crabs and lobsters, blue and gray icing for the whales, sharks and dolphins, and brightly colored icing for tropical fish. Make various shell and starfish-shaped cookies and serve them in a plastic beach bucket for a cute presentation.

    Arctic Animals

    • Arctic animal cookies would be great for a holiday party, but you can make them any time. Use penguin, polar bear and walrus-shaped cookie cutters to create the sugar cookies that will be the base for your decorations. Use black, white and gray frosting, as well as tiny black, white and yellow candies, to bring your cookie creations to life. Since these animals hail from chilly environments, turn them into ice cream sandwiches. Place a scoop of ice cream on top of an undecorated sugar cookie, and then top the scoop with a matching decorated cookie. Stick the sandwiches in the freezer until firm.

    Circus Animals

    • Create jumbo circus animal cookies, also called animal crackers, for a playful upgrade to the traditional American favorite. Use graham flour in your cookie dough for an authentic taste, and then roll out the dough for cutting. Cookie cutters can be used to make the animals, but you could also hand cut the dough for more rustic-looking cookies; think lions, elephants, tigers, bears and giraffes. Bake the treats and allow them to cool thoroughly. If you decide to leave the critters plain, you can go ahead and devour them on the spot. However, if you want to mimic some of the fancier frosted varieties of animal crackers, decorate with pink and white icing, and sprinkle on some colorful nonpareils.
