People who have nursing jobs genuinely care about their patient's needs.

Nursing is a demanding job that requires long hours and awkward schedules. Nurses work in hospitals, clinics, private homes and institutions, schools and pre-schools. Nurses are always around people who may or may not be feeling well. Nurses must have personality traits that are compatible with the high demands of the profession.

  1. Patient & Confidant

    • Patient individuals make excellent nurses. More often than not, patients are in pain, frightened or incoherent, so a patient individual is less likely to get frustrated or irritable when such circumstances occur. Confidant individuals have good leadership skills, thus those individuals do well as nurse managers because they can often effectively motivate and lead other nurses, too.

    Kind & Compassionate

    • People who are both kind and compassionate also enjoy careers as nurses. Nurses work with individuals who are terminally ill, families of patients who have been sick for long periods of time and children. All nurses should be able to empathize and have respect for their patient's needs as well as the needs of the patient's family.

    Flexible & Reliable

    • Individuals who are both flexible and reliable are compatible with nursing as a career, too. Many jobs are time-clock sensitive, such as banking and factory work. However, nursing is a career where the nurse is required to attend to the patient's needs before clocking out. Reliable individuals make good nurses because they can be depended upon to ensure each patient is safe and cared for before they leave for the day.

    Critical Thinkers

    • Critical thinkers are another type of individual that is comfortable with nursing as a career. Because of the nature of the job, nurses make decisions on medication levels, patient care plans and family support programs. Thus, nurses are required to consider several things at once at any given time. People who like critical thinking do well in high stress areas as well, such as emergency rooms and urgent treatment centers, where decision-making is a critical aspect of patient care.

    Historic Nursing Personalities

    • Clara Barton, known as the "Angel of the Battlefield," founded the American Red Cross. Florence Nightingale is known for her contributions to modern medicine and her services to the British army during the Crimean War. And Walt Whitman volunteered his time as a nurse in Washington, DC, during the Civil War. All of these individuals had a few personality traits in common, one being compassion, to enjoy a profession that places such high demands on the individual.
