Twitter Follow Rules
Twitter is a popular online social networking platform that allows you to follow people to see what they have to say, and allows others to follow you to see what you have to say. There are no rules regarding who can follow you, or how many followers you can have. When it comes to following others however, Twitter does enforce rules and limits. Failure to comply with these rules can result in having your Twitter account suspended.

Starting Out
-
You are free to follow anyone you wish, with the exception of protected accounts. To follow someone with a protected account, you will have to send a request to follow him. That person will then approve or deny your request. Because many new accounts on Twitter use it as a way to send spam messages, you may find others are reluctant to follow you back at first. However, the more you use Twitter to engage with others, the more followers you will have.
Following Limits
-
When you first begin using Twitter, you are allowed to follow up to 2,000 people. After that you will encounter limits on the number of people you can follow and how many new people you can follow each day. Twitter does not publish these limits, but they are based on the number of followers you have. Many users find they can follow additional people beyond the 2,000 cap, once they have 2,000 followers. Daily limits can also vary. No one on Twitter can follow more than 1,000 people each day. However, the daily limit for any individual account may be less than 1,000.

Aggressive Following
-
Many of the rules on following are used by Twitter to reduce aggressive following. Twitter views aggressive following as a form of spam. Some people follow many new accounts only for the purpose of getting attention (for example, many people will click on a profile when they see a new account is following them). Others will follow large numbers of people, and then unfollow them so they can bypass follow limits. Twitter may suspend an account if they believe you are aggressively following other accounts.
Third-Party Applications
-
Using or promoting third-party applications or websites that claim to get you more followers are not allowed on Twitter and fall under the "Spam" category of the Twitter rules. Any application that allows you to automatically follow people on Twitter is not allowed, with one exception: automatic follow-backs. This is where an application has your account automatically follow anyone who starts to follow you. You should carefully research any third-party application before allowing it to have access to your Twitter account.
