Relationships are difficult enough. Factor in long distance and you're at a real disadvantage. Long-distance relationships can be challenging, but they’re not impossible. By taking steps to keep the connection fresh and alive, you will find the distance not as much of an obstacle in your relationship.

Special Reminders

You might not be together all the time, but he can still be reminded of you with simple messages left on his voicemail. Call when you know he's asleep and leave a quick voicemail, telling him how much you love and appreciate him. He'll be able to wake up to your thoughtful message first thing in the morning. Surprise him with a relationship care package. Send a framed picture of the two of you or a mini-photo album containing cherished photographs. Inside the album, include mementos such as the ticket stubs to the last movie or the last concert you attended together.

Gift Baskets

Put together a gift basket of the homemade brownies he craves. Send him DVDs of episodes of the television shows that you both enjoy. Inside the basket, also include the movies you saw together. Fill up a gift basket with CDs of meaningful songs, such as the one you danced to at your sister’s wedding or your prom song.

Do Things Together While Apart

This simply means, while apart, get online and watch a movie or check out a television program at the same time. You can text or call to discuss the movie while watching. Read the same book at the same time. Create a scheduled time to discuss each chapter by either going online or calling.

Letters

Skip the quick emails and texts and go old-school romantic. Sit down and write an old-fashioned letter on pretty, scented stationary, detailing all your feelings about the guy you love. Include pictures so he can see your face as he reads your love letter or poem. A letter gives him something to look forward to every week or so. This idea also works for everyday greeting cards. It lets him know you are thinking about him even though you’re miles apart.

Surprise Visit

This can be tricky because you have to make sure he’s around when you go to visit. Enlist the help of his friends to keep him on course with your surprise. For instance, have his friends take him to the local pizza shop, where you can surprise him by popping in. Have his friends suggest watching a movie at home so he’ll be there for your arrival.
