A Christmas trivia quiz is a fun way to learn about the season.

What better time for a trivia quiz than the Christmas season? With the holiday's many customs, traditions, history and religious significance, fourth-graders will have fun seeing how much they know about this special time of year. A trivia quiz can also be an opportunity to learn about the holiday. Students will enjoy researching and writing out their own questions for their classmates or coming up with a quiz for their siblings. Another idea is to put the questions and answers in a book to be used another year or to plan a gift exchange as part of the quiz. Does this Spark an idea?

    • A trivia quiz can include questions on American customs and traditions as well as those of other countries. Here are some ideas: In what country did the Christmas tree start? What do you usually find on the top of the tree? What do children leave for Santa on Christmas Eve? When do we celebrate the Feast of St. Nicholas? What are the traditional colors of the candles on an Advent wreath? What are the two most popular Christmas colors? How many days of Christmas are there? In England, what is December 26th called? Can you name three Christmas traditions? What is traditionally worn by a young girl on the Swedish feast of St. Lucy.

    Literature

    • Christmas books offer many ideas for good trivia questions. "A Christmas Carol," "The Night Before Christmas," or "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" are filled with interesting details for children. Try these questions: What is Scrooge's first name? How many nights did the spirits visit Scrooge? Who is rumored to have stolen Christmas? How many days of Christmas are there? What was the first name of the author of "A Christmas Carol"? Who wrote "The Night Before Christmas"? Who said, "God bless us, every one"? What does St. Nicholas say at the end of "The Night Before Christmas"?

    Religious

    • The religious aspects of Christmas present an opportunity to teach children about the sacredness of the day and about the Christmas story. Ask children to answer these questions: What were the names of the Wise Men? What three gifts did the Wise Men bring? What did the angels say to the shepherds when they announced Christ's birth? In what town was Jesus born? Why were Joseph and Mary traveling from Nazareth to Bethlehem? What is included in a traditional crib scene?

    Music

    • What would Christmas be without Christmas music and its beloved carols and traditional songs. Children will enjoy these questions: Can you name three Christmas carols? What carol contains the lines, "Star of wonder, star of light, star with royal beauty bright"? What were the names of Santa's reindeer? Who waved goodbye, saying, "Don't you cry, I'll be back again some day"? Who wrote "Silent Night"? What is the first line of "O, Come, All Ye Faithful"? In "Jingle Bells," what do you dash through the snow in? In "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," what food do the singers want? What is the name of the little girl in "The Nutcracker"?
