There are several types of dental prosthetics that are commonly made to improve the look and strength of your teeth. Some are removable and are held in place by clasps or by existing teeth. Others are individual teeth that are screwed in place permanently. Several different materials are used to make each type of prosthetic, and each has its own benefits and downfalls.

Acrylic

Many dentures are made using acrylic resins. Acrylic is the best choice for people who are looking for the most aesthetically pleasing false teeth. These are flexible and blend in with the color of surrounding gums and teeth. Acrylic is not the strongest choice, however. It is brittle and can break easily if not cared for. It is used mainly for temporary false teeth or in concert with metal for longer-lasting versions. Acrylic is also the less expensive option for dentures.

Metals

Several different types of metals are used in making false teeth, depending on the type of teeth being made. Dentures that are permanent and strongly made use chromium and cobalt for the base. The visible sections may still be made of acrylic. Though this is a stronger and lighter option than acrylic dentures, it is also the more expensive option, and could cause problems if you have a metal sensitivity. The condition is called allergic contact dermatitis, and people with the sensitivity are often sensitive to chrome, cobalt, and nickel. Implants are screwed into the bone using titanium screws, which are less apt to cause a metal sensitivity, and much more permanent than dentures, but also significantly more expensive.

Porcelain

This material has been used for false teeth since the 170s as a rot-proof option. Ceramics are now used commonly to make crowns and bridges. Crowns are caps that go over existing teeth, and bridges are made by crowning existing teeth and adding a false tooth between the connection of real crowned teeth. Porcelain can be used with metal similar to the way acrylic is used, or it can be used on its own. It is stronger than acrylic, but still not as strong as the metals used in dental prosthetics. Another common use of porcelain is to make veneers, which add strength and a nicer look to damaged existing teeth.
