Frighten trick-or-treaters with a scary house put together with items at home.

On the spookiest day of the year, you want to scare as many guests as you can. But you can't scare anyone without getting your hands dirty decorating. You don't need to buy anything to give your home a scary atmosphere this Halloween. Using things found around the house, you can spook anyone that wanders into your creepy abode. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Hallways

    • Search for old photographs and portraits from the late 1800s online. Print out the creepiest pictures you find, and frame them with any old frames you have available. Hang them in the hallway, adding drips of red paint to the frame to give it that extra spooky feel. Create some bats to hang from the ceiling by drawing some bat silhouettes onto cardboard. Cut the bats out, and spray paint them black. When dry, hang them from the ceiling of the hallway using some clear wire or white yarn.

    Living Spaces

    • To make your living room or den look abandoned, cover the couches and chairs with old white sheets. If you like, shred the sheets using scissors, and drip some blood on them before you cover your furniture with them. Make some spiders to add to the abandoned atmosphere by scrunching up some old black socks into circle shapes. Add eight black pipe cleaners, or other black pipe-shapes, to either side of the circle to make a spider figure. Attach them to the sheets using super glue. You can also tape these to the walls using double-sided tape.

    Windows

    • Give trick-or-treaters a fright from outside by spooking up the windows from the inside. Gather up some old cardboard, and decide on several scary shapes, such as a ghost, a witch or a mummy. Draw the silhouettes of these shapes onto the cardboard, and cut them out. Paint the figures black, and post them in front of your windows at night, directing a light source from behind them. Hang some curtains in the windows in such a way that the silhouettes look like they're peeking out from behind them.

    Mantels and Tabletops

    • Little touches here and there on mantels and tables work wonders to create a scary mood. Make a table centerpiece by simply gathering up an old vase and filling it with dead leaves. Use these leaves to secure some dead flowers to sit up past the brim of the vase. Place some old pillar candles on the mantels. To make them scarier, add some drips of red paint to the sides.
