Many types of appetizers can be made using biscuit dough as an ingredient.

Making appetizers for a crowd is simplified by incorporating premade ingredients into recipes. Using prepared dips, salsas and sauces are commonly taken shortcuts in creating hot and cold starters. To add a layer of crispness to appetizers, use flaky biscuit dough sold in tubes in the refrigerated section of grocery stores. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Italian-Inspired Combinations

    • Make a pull-apart appetizer by rolling each piece of biscuit dough into a 3-inch round, filling it with a pepperoni round and shredded mozzarella, forming balls with the dough and placing them side-by-side in a round cake pan. Sprinkle with Parmesan before baking and serve with warm, jarred spaghetti sauce for dipping. An easier starter requires wrapping premade meatballs and string cheese in biscuit dough, baking until crisp and accompanying the bites with marinara dipping sauce. A good make-ahead appetizer requires separating the layers of flaky dough and topping each disk with a mixture of spinach dip mixed with shredded, red bell pepper, carrots, green onions and Italian seasonings. Refrigerate for at least an hour before baking.

    Mexican-Influenced Appetizers

    • To make grilled, faux quesadillas, roll the biscuit dough into disks and top each with sour cream mixed with ranch dressing mix, salsa, cheese, deli-sliced, oven-roasted chicken breast and a Mexican cheese mixture. Top with another dough disk and grill on both sides until the cheese melts. For a Mexican twist on stuffed peppers, top raw biscuit rounds with strips of sautéed red or green bell pepper, seasoned ground beef and cheese. Bake and top with sour cream. To make a south of the border biscuit beef taco, spread taco filling and shredded cheese over rolled out biscuit rounds, fold in half, seal and bake until golden brown.

    Asian-Style Starters

    • Homemade pot stickers use flaky biscuit dough layers to envelope a mixture of ground chicken, shredded carrot, scallions and Asian flavorings, and then brown the pockets in a skillet. Serve with a zesty jam sauce mixed with red pepper flakes. Substitute shrimp or crab for the chicken and add fresh ginger and pepper flakes to the filling for spicy, seafood pot stickers. Create Asian pork dumplings by wrapping dough disks around a combination of ground pork, chopped spinach, scallions and Asian flavorings and baking until the pork is done.

    Salad-Type Hors D'oeuvres

    • Mix shrimp, fresh peas and mandarin orange slices. Toss with a piquant dressing of lime juice, fresh mint, honey and garlic and serve in flaky biscuit bowls. Chicken Caesar salad cups are made by baking shredded cooked chicken in biscuit dough pressed into mini muffin tins or cups and topping them with lettuce, Caesar salad dressing and fresh strips of Parmesan.
