What Are the Duties of a College Professor of Business?
A college professor of business divides his time among teaching in the classroom, conducting research, writing and publishing research articles, and possibly teaching online courses. The professor might be either an associate or a tenured employee. Tenured professors spend more time conducting research for publication. Business professors are expected to keep current in their field, may serve on academic committees and typically teach courses in one area of concentration, such as marketing or accounting.

Classroom Teaching
-
A business college professor is usually responsible for teaching a certain amount of courses related to one or two business disciplines. For example, a tenured professor may teach an introductory marketing class as well as two courses related to advertising and e-commerce marketing strategy. The professor is responsible for designing and developing the curriculum within university guidelines. A business college professor may introduce material from his own work experience. He may also bring in former students or business contacts with practical real-world experience to supplement the course material. Lectures, discussions and classroom projects are typically facilitated by the professor and may include student participation in national student project competitions.
Online Course Teaching
-
Online courses are a popular alternative to the traditional classroom setting. College professors may deliver some of their courses in an online format. This requires adapting the course material to work with an online delivery method, communicating through e-mail, and receiving, grading and returning required assignments through the course's Internet platform. Some business schools deliver 100 percent of their courses online.

Research and Publication
-
College professors are usually required to conduct research related to their subject area and regularly publish the results in academic journals. For those business schools that are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, professors are required to participate in research that helps the institution improve its academic program. That research might entail introducing new learning methods, observing the results and publishing the findings. The new methods might be used in future classroom instruction depending on their success.
Administrative Responsibilities
-
College professors in business are also required to mentor students, participate in campus activities and possibly serve on administrative committees. Most professors who are at the associate level and above serve as academic advisers to a certain number of assigned students. They provide guidance regarding course selection and course load requirements. They may serve as an adviser for student-run activities such as the marketing club.
