Scary Theme Ideas
When planning a theme party, choosing the best decorations, entertainment, costumes and other elements can make the experience a fun one for family and friends. A scary or horror theme is a perfect idea for a Halloween party or as a unique way to celebrate a birthday or other occasion. Does this Spark an idea?

Zombie Apocalypse
-
For this undead theme, ask the guests to dress as zombies in their worst tattered burial clothing and make-up. Play classic zombie movies such as "Night of the Living Dead" or any of the zombie films by directors such as George Romero or Lucio Fulci throughout the party. Renting a fog machine and using red or green light bulbs will add a spooky element to the festivities. Decorate the party with replica tombstones, spiderwebs and other graveyard props. Serve a meat tray, spaghetti, grape eyeballs and tofu brains with recipes from the Food Network.
Mad Scientist's Laboratory
-
Have guests bubbling with excitement with this theme. Ask attendees to dress as mad scientists, Dr. Frankenstein, Frankenstein's monster, the Bride of Frankenstein, ghoulish nurses or unwilling test subjects. For entertainment, show movies that feature scary doctors and lab experiments gone array. Decorate the party area with replicas of lab equipment such as beakers, old microscopes and test tubes filled with mysterious liquids. Add dry ice to lime-based punch (follow the instructions that come with it) just as the guests are about to arrive.

Movie Villians
-
Movies provide us with a number of scary monsters and monster-like characters that could be used for a scary-themed party. Ask your guests to dress as their favorite movie villain, such as Leatherface from "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," Freddy Krueger from "Nightmare on Elm Street," or Jason from "Friday the 13th." Decorate the party area with macabre items like hockey masks, bloody knives or wind chimes made from prop bones. Have volunteers dressed as movie villains to scare guests as they arrive. For entertainment, show popular horror movies and play a horror movie trivia game.
Vampire Convention
-
A fun way to kick off a vampire convention is to ask guests to dress as their favorite bloodthirsty fiends. Guests could dress as classic Count Dracula or as a more modern vampire from "True Blood" or "Twilight." Decorate by draping tables in black or red tablecloths and using centerpieces featuring faux black roses or red roses in black vases. Candelabras make nice additions to tablescapes as well. Hang prop bats, red streamers and spiderwebs along the walls. Play vampire movies throughout the evening or have dark, gothic music playing lightly in the background. Along with other party food, serve red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing. Make them look like they've been bitten by a vampire by squirting two small "fang marks" made from red gel food coloring.
