How to Make Gel Fuel

Tiffany Holley

Most people enjoy sitting by a fireplace. It evokes a feeling of coziness and warmth, especially on a chilly, wet, winter day. Not everyone can put a vented fireplace in their home, so some are using new gel-fueled, ventless fireplaces.

The gel fuel can be expensive; however you can make your own at a fraction of the price.

Tip

You can also add scent to your fireplace gel by adding a few drops of essential oil found at your local candle supply or craft store.

  1. Melt 3 ounces of plain soy wax in a nonstick pan. Add 1/4 cup of 70 percent rubbing alcohol, and stir with a wooden spoon until thoroughly mixed.

  2. Pour the wax and alcohol mixture into three empty soup cans, filling them three-quarters of the way from the top. Insert a wick into the center of each one.

  3. Let the gel sit in the refrigerator to cool for several hours until set. Trim the wicks to about 1/4-inch in length.
