Canned chicken noodle soup might seem like it will last forever in your kitchen cupboard, or at least until your next bout of flu. And canned soups do have a long shelf life, providing they are properly stored and maintained. Check the can's expiration date and discard any canned soup that has an off smell or flavor.
The shelf life of canned chicken noodle soup is usually one to two years. Use canned foods by the last day of the month and year listed as the expiration date on the can. Although the soup is safe to eat indefinitely, as long as the can isn't opened, quality and nutritional value decrease over time. Vegetables may darken in color and the noodles may become mushy.
Commercially canned chicken noodle soup is processed using strict sterilizing methods and is usually a safe product. But damage to the cans can introduce bacteria. Don't eat the soup from dented, rusted, scratched or bulging cans. Inspect cans carefully before you buy them.
Storage conditions affect the shelf life of canned foods. For best results, store cans in a cool, dry place with temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Canned chicken soup stored at temperatures above 100 F will quickly deteriorate. Rotate canned foods, using the oldest cans first.
Wipe the lids of canned chicken noodle soup with a damp cloth to remove any dirt. Open the cans and pour it into a saucepan or microwave-safe dish. Add water if directed, and heat the soup to boiling before serving. If the chicken noodle soup looks or smells off, throw it out without tasting it. If it doesn't taste right, throw it out.
