Gifts for Kids to Make for Pastor Appreciation

Let kids express their enthusiasm and appreciation for their pastor.

Although gifts for pastor appreciation are generally expected from adults in the congregation, it's certainly true that kids can also demonstrate their appreciation. Kids might not have a lot of money to spend, but they do have genuine gratitude and love to show and a variety of mediums from which to choose.

  1. Artwork

    • Kids can be extraordinarily creative. Organize a group of your church's kids and provide a variety of art supplies -- paint, canvas, paper, markers and colored pencils. Tell the kids to create personal tributes to the pastor. Once the artwork has been completed, frame and hang the artwork on the walls of the pastor's office. You could also get a long sheet of roll paper and stencil the words "We love you, (pastor's name)!" Let the kids color it in, draw pictures and sign their names. Surprise the pastor and hang it in the sanctuary on Pastor Appreciation Day.

    Drama

    • Have a group of older kids write a play about the pastor and the work he does for the church. Give every child a role and at least a couple of lines. Perform the play during Sunday evening services and follow with a reception. Or, give a responsible teen a video camera and have her walk through the church capturing footage of all the church's most important places. Edit the footage and have each child contribute commentary, such as "This is the social hall, where the pastor says grace before every meal at the church." Put the video on a tape or DVD for the pastor.

    Symbolic Gifts

    • Tell every kid to bring a box full of unwanted toys or clothes on a designated Sunday (advise parents to help). During Sunday School, tell kids to sort the items into categories such as books, clothes and toys. Clean the items and then donate them to an area charity in the pastor's name. Or, ask all the kids to donate one week of their allowance and make a donation in the pastor's name to the church building fund or the pastor's favorite charity.

    Other Gifts

    • Have the church kids sign a pledge vowing to pray for the pastor, then present it to the pastor in a frame. Or, have kids each write a letter to the pastor telling him what he means to them or sharing an experience they enjoyed or appreciated. Bind the letters and present them to the pastor in book form. You could also help the kids create a "Pastor's Kids" photo album. Give an older kid a digital camera and tell her to take individual pictures of all the kids. Give each kid her own page and a small strip of paper beneath the picture to write a caption or a message to the pastor. Have all the kids sign the front page.
