Weddings are a time full of emotion that can sometimes be best expressed in poetry. At your wedding, give your parents the gift of a poem to tell them how much you appreciate all they've taught and done for you. Write or perform a sonnet, frame their favorite written words or give them a way to compose their own poetry on this special occasion.

  1. Write

    • Draft a poem for your parents or in-laws as a gift during this time of love and family. Follow a certain poetry style, such as a limerick, sonnet or rhyme, or create one of your own. The important thing is to send a message about how much your parents mean to you. Capture a memory from your youth or discuss what they've taught you and how you'll use this knowledge in your new marriage. Write a poem for each set of parents or draft one that can be given to both.

    Frame

    • Many couples have a favorite poem, whether it's a famous love ballad or a passage read during their own wedding ceremony. Give a copy of this poem as a wedding gift to your parents. Some online retailers offer poems with a variety of themes, such as love and family, that come printed on a decorative paper and framed. You might also write or type your own copy of their favorite poem and frame it yourself along with a picture from your wedding.

    Perform

    • Give your parents the gift of spoken word by performing a poem for them. Surprise them by reciting the poem during the wedding's rehearsal dinner or even during the wedding itself. Pick a poem that's appropriate for the occasion, such as one about romance or the importance of family. Try to memorize as much as you can to add to the drama of the performance. Get your new spouse involved too by alternating verses of the work.

    Journal

    • Present your parents with a way to share their poetry by giving them an empty poetry journal. Find a book with a decorative cover, perhaps in your wedding colors. Also provide a matching pen. For added inspiration, glue photographs of the family into the pages, as well as pictures from the wedding. You might also sketch pictures of dreams you have for the future that your parents can compose poems about. If your parents aren't confident in their poetry abilities but want to learn, also give them a gift certificate for a creative writing class where they can hone their skills.
