Thesis Topics in School Counseling

Save

As a future school counselor, you will have the opportunity to change children's lives, helping them deal with issues from their parents' divorce to eating disorders and other challenges. Because of the high amount of responsibility school counselors have, most states require them to have a master's degree, which requires a written thesis. Though your research adviser may guide you when picking a topic, you may have a hard time choosing what to explore on your own. By examining different categories of thesis topics, you can choose the topic best for your education and interests.

Professional Identity

  • When working with troubled children all day, or with children who are encountering challenges in their day-to-day lives, it can be difficult for school counselors to keep perspectives on their own lives. One possible area of thesis topics for school counseling includes issues of professional versus personal identity, and how counselors can achieve a healthy work/life balance. Other related topics might include the ideal functions of a school counselor, the kinds of tasks that counselors should handle, and day-to-day realities of this profession.

Cultural Diversity

  • No matter where you live, cultural diversity is an issue in some form in the schools in your area. Working through issues of cultural diversity, whether in one school or a selection of area schools, can raise interesting and important issues for a thesis topic on school counseling. Areas of consideration might include integration, historical and social treatment of minorities in a particular school or district, and forced-busing legislation, if that applies to your area.

Human Growth and Development

  • Other school counseling theses might deal with issues encountered through the normal process of human growth and development, or issues that might raise roadblocks to healthy development. You might study a topic like body image, which most girls and some young men will deal with at some point in their lives. One possible obstacle might be a topic such as divorce and its implications for schoolchildren.

Group and Individual Work

  • Because school counselors often have limited time, they may try as much as possible to conduct meetings in small groups. One study that would prove useful as a thesis topic regarding school counseling would be the impact of individual work, versus the impact of group work, on various problems that schoolchildren face.
