Find the best way to burp your baby.

Burping your baby during and after a feeding is key to getting rid of air bubbles that can cause gas, spit-up and even lead to the pain associated with colic. There isn't just one correct style for burping a baby, though. Get to know your baby's needs and use the method that works best for your little one.

  1. On Your Shoulder

    • Burp your baby by placing him in an upright position facing you with his chin on your shoulder. Make sure you have a burp cloth on your shoulder as well, in case the burp causes any spit-up. For this style of burping, hold your baby with one hand and pat his back gently with the other. You can rock, sit, stand or walk while burping your baby on your shoulder. This technique works well for a gassy baby.

    On Your Lap

    • Burp your baby facedown on your lap while you are sitting. To create a softer surface for your baby, lay a pillow on your lap and place a burp cloth or receiving blanket over the pillow. If you wish to just place her on your lap, all you need is a burp cloth. Allow your baby to comfortably rest on her stomach on your lap or the pillow, if you're using one. Make sure to support her head and that it is higher than her chest. Gently pat her back until she burps. If you are unable to get a burp, pick her up from this position and the movement may bring you success.

    Baby Sitting Up

    • Help your baby burp by sitting him upright on your lap. Make sure to support his head and chest by putting his chin in the palm of your hand. Avoid pressing on his throat, as this could cause him to choke. Using your other hand, gently pat his back for 15 seconds at a time and wait another 15 seconds before repeating the patting. Continue this method until he burps. This technique works well for babies struggling with gas bubbles.

    Yoga Ball

    • Assist your baby in getting rid of her air bubbles by burping her on a yoga ball. Carefully place your baby facedown onto the ball so that she is lying on her stomach. Maintain a firm hold while moving the yoga ball in a circular motion, until she is able to burp. You can also sit on the ball while holding your baby on your lap and gently bounce up and down until she burps.
