How to wage a successful political campaign.

Whether you are competing in a small-town local election or running as President of the United States, a political campaign can be run in a dozen different ways. Budget and campaign donations are the first things to consider when planning a political campaign. Don't be afraid to reach out to potential donors early to buy your essentials and hit the ground running when the campaign season hits full swing.

  1. Public Speaking

    • Sign up for as many speaking engagements as possible to get your message out to the public. This is a direct campaign strategy, because you are personally communicating with potential constituents. Ensure you are able to stay after a meeting or dinner where you are speaking to answer any additional questions that may not have been covered during your allotted time.

    Local Event Attendance

    • Having a presence at local events such as a county fair or local festival will also give you direct contact with the public. You can either walk around handing out fliers or campaign cards or set up a booth so interested parties may approach and speak with you. Ensure there is someone at the booth at all times. If the booth is not attended to, people will often be turned off of the candidate.

    Press Releases

    • Send regular press releases and photographs to local media for continued coverage of your campaign. If you attend local events or give remarks, ensure you provide all of the details. This is especially important in local races. Local media does not always have the means to cover every event for all candidates running a campaign.

    Multimedia

    • Produce video and radio spots and establish a Facebook page, twitter account and website. Post a campaign video to YouTube to increase the momentum of your message and reach younger voters. This medium is gaining popularity, and a well-produced video will be viewed by many potential constituents. Post links on Facebook, twitter, campaign mailings, media distributions and your website. TV news outlets are working to gain website users, so include your website in press releases and ask that they link it to the website.

    Campaign Signs

    • Campaign signs are important to large and small political campaigns. It gets your name in front of the voters so they know you are running. Direct mail and door-to-door will help you throughout the campaign, but they are usually one-time events. A campaign sign will stay up during the entire campaign, and voters will recognize your name.
