The Most Effective Face Paints

Face painting is popular on some holidays, for sporting events, as well as at children's events. While some people take the idea of face painting literally and use paint on the face, you should use makeup that is designed specifically for face painting to create color and character. The most effective type of makeup for this purpose is theatrical makeup.

  1. Color Wheels

    • Theatrical color wheels are available in a wide variety of shades for many purposes. Color wheels consist of a round container with multiple cream makeup colors sectioned off in the container. For example, clown color wheels are generally created with the primary colors blue, red and green, as well as the secondary colors of yellow and orange. The clown color wheel will also include black and white. These bold colors allow for bright face paint art for small designs such as lighting bolts, team phrases and flowers. Color wheels are made with water-based makeup that is easily applied with a makeup brush and easily removed with baby wipes.

    Color Creams and Cakes

    • For theater, color creams and cakes offer the makeup artist a wide variety of colors in individual plastic containers. Cream makeup is water based and compacted into a small tub container. To use the makeup, simply dab the brush on the surface of the makeup and load the brush with the desired amount. Cream makeup is also available with glitter for those who want their face painting designs to shine. Cake makeup, on the other hand, is solid and dry to the touch, requiring you to mix in water with the makeup before application. You can also apply cake makeup with a brush, but the effect of the cake makeup will not be as intense as cream makeup because cream makeup offers more coverage than cake makeup.

    Color Pencils

    • Color pencils contain condensed water-based cream theatrical makeup. These pencils normally come with their own sharpeners at the tip and can be used just like a writing tool to create a design on the face. Made in a wide variety of colors and with glitter as well, color pencils are effective for small and large face painting projects.

    Powder

    • Theatrical makeup artists understand that powder is the key to long-lasting makeup. Powder sets the makeup on the skin, making the makeup less prone to smearing or fading. Use a translucent loose powder and a powder puff for best results. After the makeup has been applied, load the puff with powder, then quickly and lightly pat the powder over the makeup. Remove excess powder with a clean makeup brush, dabbing lightly around the face painting design.
