Cleaning your air conditioner regularly helps ensure proper function.

During warm weather, you may rely on your air conditioner to keep your home cool and comfortable. To ensure its continued performance, however, routine maintenance is crucial. Cleaning your air conditioner on a regular basis removes the dirt and other debris that accumulates inside, requiring the appliance to work harder when cooling a room. It may initially seem like a daunting project because some disassembly is required, but the improved performance of your air conditioner makes it worth the effort. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Remove Filter

    • The first step in cleaning your air conditioner is to remove its filter, which is located in the front grille of the appliance. Some models feature disposal filters, so you can simply toss the old one and replace it with a new, clean filter. Others have reusable filters that you must clean. Place a reusable filter flat on the bottom of your sink and carefully sprinkle water on the surface. With a rag, gently apply laundry detergent. Cover the filter with hot water and allow it to sit for approximately 15 minutes. Rinse it with warm water and hang it to dry.

    Brush Away Interior Debris

    • While the filter dries, carefully remove the air conditioner's front grille from the appliance. Many modern models have a simple spring clip or latch system that holds the grille in place and allows you to easily take it off. Older models may require the removal of screws. After you have taken the grille off, remove the air conditioner's metal cover so you have access to the interior. Typically, you must remove a series of screws before you can lift off the cover. Keep a container nearby to hold the screws so you do not lose them. Carefully remove the oil plugs so the interior oil holes are visible and apply several drops of oil to them. With a stiff brush, remove any dirt or debris covering the front fins. The fins are usually made from soft, malleable aluminum, so use an up-and-down motion to avoid bending them.

    Use Degreaser Spray

    • When you have brushed away the visible dirt from inside the air conditioner, apply a degreaser spray to the front fins to remove any oil residue or grime. There are products designed specifically for heating and air conditioning systems, but you can also use a basic kitchen and bathroom cleanser that cuts grease. Allow the degreaser to sit for approximately 15 minutes or as long as the product's label indicates so it has time to break down the grease. Carefully pour warm water into the front fins to wash away the residue. Avoid getting any water near the air conditioner's electrical components by covering the motor and other parts with a rag to absorb any errant water.

    Remove Lingering Debris

    • Complete all of the necessary steps for the air conditioner's condenser as well. Finish up the cleaning by using a rag to carefully wipe the appliance's fan blades. With a hose attachment, use your vacuum to remove any leftover dust or debris. Drain any water that may be left in the air conditioner's case and allow it to dry. Once you have reassembled it, the appliance is ready for use.
