Many of today's senior citizens are active and vibrant.

In the United States, senior citizens and retirees often remain active and busy. Many seniors participate in a variety of recreational activities that occupy their days and keep their minds and bodies alert and in motion. Depending on their degree of mobility, senior citizens and the elderly can enjoy various activities long into their golden years.

  1. Playing Cards

    • Cards are a popular pastime among many senior citizens and the elderly. There are hundreds of games and variations of those games that older people enjoy as a favorite pastime. Gin, bridge, hearts and cribbage are all popular choices. Many seniors also enjoy playing solitaire. The wide variety of card games means that games can be played with different amounts of people. Games like solitaire or concentration are great for senior citizens or the elderly because they are played alone. Bridge, hearts and pinochle are great for groups of seniors.

    Walking

    • Walking is a way for senior citizens to keep their bodies moving and active. Because walking is a low-impact exercise, it's less stressful on the legs, feet and knees. Many seniors enjoy walking outside when the weather is comfortable, but in instances when it becomes too windy, rainy, hot or cold, there are alternatives. Many senior citizens and the elderly enjoy "mall walking." In addition to offering ample space in which to walk, malls usually have a coffee shop or restaurant nearby for a relaxing beverage after the walk is finished.

    Travel

    • Traveling around the country or around the world is another popular activity for senior citizens and the elderly. There are many ways that senior citizens may choose to travel. Some spend their retirement years in a recreational vehicle, hopping across the country from historical sites to campgrounds and R.V. parks to national parks and monuments. Other seniors choose to spend their time flying around the world, visiting historical or tropical destinations or visiting the birthplace of their ancestors.

    Bingo

    • Bingo has long been a popular recreational activity for senior citizens and the elderly. Bingo moves at a slower pace and isn't overly stressful, but still provides a stimulating environment for the mind. Several facilities host bingo games and special bingo nights, including Native American casinos, churches, VFWs, American Legion clubs and other community organizations.
