Choose a Zen Color Scheme
-
Colors can affect you psychologically. They can influence your mood or your feelings. They can change your perception of temperature. Colors can even affect your perception of size, space and weight. Choose neutral colors such as tan or cream to help create your Zen atmosphere. "Cool" colors, such as pale blues or greens, can also be calming, relaxing and refreshing. They evoke images of nature, such as the sky or living plants. Avoid "warm" or bright colors, such as orange and red, which are exciting and stimulating.
Open Spaces
-
One of the goals of Zen Buddhism is to achieve an open mind. This can be reflected in your home through your use of open spaces. If you have the option, avoid closing off rooms. For example, use flooring and counters to separate your kitchen from your dining and family rooms, rather than enclosing each space in solid walls. This openness will help with air and energy flow and keep you from feeling claustrophobic or "cut off" in your own home.

Simplicity
-
Aim for simplicity when decorating your home. Use minimal wall décor and keep your hallways and floors free of clutter. Don't overstuff each room with furniture. Include only enough to make the room comfortable. Don't confuse simplicity with starkness, however. Your home shouldn't be devoid of decoration. Decorate with items that make you feel calm, relaxed and happy. Your goal should be to avoid clutter while creating a comfortable space for you and your family.
Elements
-
One thing you can do to create a Zen atmosphere in your home is include the natural elements of earth, fire, wood, air and water. Place small fountains throughout your space. Light candles when you can. Put at least one live plant in each room of your home. These not only remind you of life and energy, but can purify the air in your home. You can also place wind chimes on balconies or even inside your home. The sound they make can be soothing and meditative.
