"Oblivion" Soul Gems Tips

"The Elder Scroll 4: Oblivion" is a fantasy role-playing game in which players can roam a wide world and take on numerous challenges and side quests. Magic is featured heavily in the game. Players can create and cast their own spells, and they can also create and use enchanted items, weapons and armor. Items called "soul gems" are necessary to create or recharge enchantments.

  1. Acquiring

    • Soul gems can be found throughout the world. Since they are included in the game's standard loot lists, soul gems appear randomly. You can usually buy soul gems from merchants that specialize in magical equipment, or from the Mages Guild, whose members will also find soul gems scattered throughout the guild halls. You may occasionally acquire a soul gem as part of a quest. These soul gems are usually required for that quest and should not be used for other purposes.

    Charging

    • A soul gem is charged by trapping the essence of a slain creature with the aid of the "soul trap" spell. If a creature dies while the spell is active, the creature's essence is captured in an empty soul gem. The spell can either be cast directly or be enchanted into a weapon. A weapon enchanted with the soul trap effect should only be used to strike the final few killing blows, as charges will be wasted needlessly when fighting. There are five standard grades of soul gems: petty, lesser, common, greater, and grand. These can hold the essence of progressively more powerful creatures from the petty, such as dogs, wolves and mud crabs, to the grand, which include the Lich and Minotaur Lord.

    Usage

    • Soul gems are used at enchanting altars to weave spell effects into different items. The more powerful the spell effect, the higher grade of soul required. Filled soul gems provide enchantments with a certain amount of power, depending on the level of essence contained. More powerful effects and longer durations will generally use more power. The more total power that is provided by the soul gem, the more times the enchantment can be used before being depleted. A very powerful enchantment still may only be cast a few times even with a grand soul. Enchanted items can be recharged with filled gems directly from the inventory, restoring charges. All soul gems vanish when they are used, with the exception of one special soul gem.

    Special Gems

    • There are two special soul gems in the game that behave differently. Standard soul gems are only able to capture the essence of creatures and non-humanoid daedra. Black soul gems are grand-level soul gems that can capture the souls of non-player characters and humanoid daedra, which are always grand level. The Azura's Star is a grand soul gem acquired through Azura's daedric quest; it can be reused an unlimited number of times.
