Metaphysical Properties of Dzi Beads
Dzi beads reach back thousands of years. Three classifications exist: Ancient, middle period, and new period. Ancient beads are at least 1,300 years old, those from the middle period are 100 to 350 years old, and those from the new period are less than 10 years old. The considerable gap between classifications is said to be due to a void in the creation of Dzi beads in Tibet. A chemical process utilizing sugar and an acidic material on pure agate results in the magnificent designs on pure Dzi beads. These designs are believed to hold various metaphysical and mystical blessings from divine beings.

Beads with an odd number of eyes are considerably more important and valuable. Eyes are depicted by perfect circles on the surface of the agate. They represent the celestial bodies --- sun, moon, stars --- while the exact number of each represents a different blessing. The most valued have nine eyes.
