Projects of Plastic Canvas Baskets

Plastic canvas is the basis for many needlepoint projects. This plastic sheet has tiny square holes so that embroidery floss or yarn can be threaded into the canvas to create an image. It can also be threaded together to create baskets. These baskets can be used in a variety of ways.

  1. Easter Basket

    • You can make a colorful, creative Easter basket for your children using pastel-colored pieces of plastic canvas and a coordinating shade of yarn. One sheet of plastic canvas is folded in thirds to form the base of the basket. Cut another piece in half for the sides of the baskets. Trim each of the half sheets to fit into the gaps formed by the folded sheets. Attach the sides onto the folded basket using a complementary shade of yarn by threading the yarn through both sheets to secure them together. Cut a long strip of plastic canvas to form the handle for the basket. For additional strength and decoration, use more yarn on the handles and the sides of the basket.

    Christmas Ornament

    • For a colorful Christmas ornament, create a basket to hold small mint candies. Cut clear or white plastic canvas into four heart shapes. Use white yarn to fill in the squares so that no canvas is showing. Sew the hearts together and completely cover the edges with a festive color of yarn. Add a strip of plastic canvas to the sides of the hearts for the handle. Cover the handle in a festive yarn as well. For additional decoration, add a festive decoration to each of the hearts. Place candy into the center of the basket and use the handle to hang it on your tree.

    Napkin Holder

    • Make a simple basket to hold your napkins. Use clear or white plastic canvas to make your napkin holder. Cut squares out of all four corners of the plastic canvas square to create a cross shape. Fold the arms of the cross into the center so that the edges are crisply folded. Make sure that the base is slightly larger than your napkins. Use yarn to sew the edges of the basket together. Choose a yarn that matches the holiday for which you are making the napkin holder. Once finished, add embellishments to the corners or sides of the canvas using yarn or embroidery floss.

    Craft Basket

    • Make a colorful basket for your extra balls of yarn using a large sheet of plastic canvas. Find a sheet of plastic canvas in your favorite color for the basket. For a large basket, use two sheets as the sides of your basket. Another sheet the same size should be cut in half for the shorter sides of the basket. Use another piece of plastic canvas for the bottom of your basket. To hold heavy items, secure the seams of the plastic canvas with additional yarn. Add decoration to the sides with additional yarn.
