Perennial Flowers That Bloom All Summer

Perennial Flowers That Bloom All Summer thumbnail
Many perennials have a long blooming season.

Perennials add color to flowerbeds and borders all season long. Unlike annuals, perennials come back year after year without replanting. Some perennials bloom for just a few weeks; others bloom for months on end. You can prolong the length of time perennials bloom by deadheading -- cutting blossoms off after they wilt and fade. Several perennials bloom all summer, from June through September or even October. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Achillea Millefolium "Yarrow"

    • William Shakespeare mentioned common yarrow in his works -- perhaps because of its long blooming season. Yarrow plants produce yellow flowers atop silvery-green leaves from June through September. Gardeners can cut yarrow flowers for fresh bouquets or dry them for use as everlastings.

    Coreopsis

    • Coreopsis is a gardener's favorite because it is so easy to grow. The plant produces daisy-like yellow flowers on finely cut, deep-green foliage. Blooms appear early in June and last through September. Plant height ranges from 1 to 4 feet, depending on the cultivar. Coreopsis spreads quickly, so use it to fill empty spots in borders.

    Gaillardia Grandiflora

    • Gaillardia, commonly known as blanket flower, produces daisy-like flowers in vivid orange, red and yellow colors. Blooms start appearing in early summer and last until early fall. They are a popular cut flower, long-lasting in a vase. Gaillardias range from 8 inches to 2 feet in height. Taller varieties may need to be staked.

    Daylilies

    • Each daylily bloom lasts just a single day, but the plants produce flowers throughout the summer. Daylilies -- genus Hemerocallus -- come in a variety of colors, including pure white, deep purple, and intense yellow and orange. Many varieties are as fragrant as they are beautiful.

    Other Varieties

    • Several other perennials bloom from June through September. Consider Heliopsis, with yellow daisy-like blooms; Nepeta, also known as catmint, with its soft leaves and purple flowers; and lavender, a fragrant herb with silvery leaves and long-stemmed white or purple flower stalks.
