Before the birth of the Internet, many teachers had students come to their homes for instruction on musical instruments, especially piano, or instructions in sewing, cooking, car repair and typing, or even for sports instruction. Students made appointments since often instructors had a cadre of pupils. In the evenings, on weekends or in the summer, many professional teachers tutored students in various academic subjects in their homes.

Now, with broadband Internet access and webcams (optional for online instruction), instructors can teach more classes with more students. Practically all K-12 school systems, colleges, universities and vocational schools offer online instruction in various subjects, and the demand for teachers remains high. Taught entirely online, all aspects of traditional, face-to-face courses must now be translated to Web platforms. High demand exists for instructors with backgrounds in curriculum design. The need for online tutoring in academic subjects has also expanded. Websites such as Jobs4Tutors.com or Smarthinking.com can provide tutors for subscribing students of all ages. In addition, most colleges and universities have online writing centers with tutors that counsel students in the writing process and show them how to edit their own papers. These tutors never have to leave their homes to interact with their students.
Online Researchers

Many choose to work from home as online researchers. From writing for academic think tanks to indexing for libraries to providing legal research, writers can work from professional databases provided by the employer, or freelance and subscribe individually to professional databases. Finally, market researchers work from home for private businesses and corporations, discovering the public's taste or use of products.
