Tips on How to Build Websites

Tips on How to Build Websites thumbnail
Keep some simple rules in mind when building a website.

Website design may seem easy until you attempt to do it. There are numerous things to think about, and the most important element is to make a website that users will feel comfortable using. Then you want to guide the user to the action you desire, which might be buying a product or signing up for a newsletter, or sharing the website link with their friends.

  1. Choosing a Web Host

    • Don't choose a Web host based solely on price, but don't ignore price either. Ask the owners of some websites you have visited where their website is hosted, and consider one of those. Consider how many free domain names, if any, will be included with your Web host, as this is an easy way to save money; it's also much easier to have your domain name hosted at the same host as your website. Check out the support offered by all of the hosts you are considering, and check out their guarantees. Also, check into the design services or templates offered by the hosts you are considering, unless you have web development experience.

    Search Engine Optimization

    • Do some reading about search engine optimization; don't leave this step until after you website is up and running. The time to choose keywords is before you've worked out the structure of your website (also called the site map) since you want the menus, the page titles and the file names of the individual pages to contain your keywords.

    Branding and Content

    • The look and feel of your website should match the look of your other company literature and logos. It should also fit with the general image you have of your company. Your company might be new and modern, traditional or conservative. The design of the website can reflect these concepts by the choice of colors, fonts and other design choices. The content should inform the visitor, make them feel comfortable and give them a "call to action" of what you want them to do once they arrive. Structure each page for maximum readability, using headlines, subheads, bullets, numbered lists, and short paragraphs to make it easy for the visitor to read the text.

    Web Page Design

    • Each page should have a series of links, called navigation links, that take the users to the other main pages of the website. This set of links should look the same on all pages and be located in the same place. If you have a more complicated website, organize your content into sections and make sure the navigation is clear within each section as well as when moving from section to section. Make sure the font colors contrast with the color and background behind it, so the text is easy to read. This generally means dark text against light background, or light text on a dark background.
