Finger foods are cost-effective for a wedding reception on a budget.

Planning a wedding on a budget is easy to do with a good plan and a strict budget. Reception food can be both simple and delicious, and guests will enjoy a wide assortment of finger food to tempt their palettes and tickle their taste buds. The most important things to remember about finger foods is that they should be small enough to pick up easily and they should not be messy.

  1. Crudites and Other Trays

    • Trays with a variety of foods that guests can easily pick up and eat are simple to assemble, colorful and appealing. A crudite tray is a compilation of raw vegetables like celery, carrots, cucumbers, scallions, radishes, peppers and jicama. Cut the vegetables into thin strips. For something fancier, you can slice cucumbers and jicama 1/8 inch thick and use small cookie cutters to make appealing shapes. Place a savory dip in the center of the tray. Other tray options include fruit trays with berries and melons. Stay away from fruits like apples that will turn brown once they are exposed to air. You can also cut several types of cheese into cubes and put olives with a cup of toothpicks in the center of the tray.

    Sandwiches

    • Sandwiches are another great option for finger food at a wedding reception. Have fun making them by using breads in a variety of colors. Choose dark pumpernickel breads, brown rye breads, golden egg breads and the standard white bread. For fillings, chicken salad, seafood salad and pimento cheese work well. Cucumber sandwiches with a little flavored cream cheese are inexpensive but fancy. Remove the crusts from the bread and cut the sandwiches into small triangles or squares. You can even use cookie cutters to make prettier sandwiches. You can refrigerate sandwiches for up to 24 hours before the reception.

    Bites

    • Give the reception guests a selection of "bites." For the bride on a budget, these are easy to make or are available at most wholesale food stores. They may need to be heated in the oven just before the reception and kept warm in a chafing dish. Serve items like stuffed mushroom caps, cheese sticks and crab balls. For dessert bites, a chocolate fountain is spectacular and fun. Surround it with skewers and a selection of fruit, marshmallows and cookies. Chocolate fountains are found at most party rental outlets. Preparing the chocolate for the fountain is easy; it usually just requires melted semi-sweet chocolate and a little bit of vegetable oil.

    Sushi

    • Sushi has become more and more popular and available. Treat guests to a selection of sushi fresh from the local market. Nowadays, most grocery stores are carrying sushi. For a wedding reception, choose items that contain cured or cooked seafood rather than raw items and keep them refrigerated until reception time. California rolls work very well and are available in several versions. Provide guests with soy sauce, pickled ginger and wasabi to finish the finger-food display.
