Zombies can crawl from graves or be infected by toxic means.

Halloween, horror conventions and Zombie Walks all scream for awesome zombie costumes. Female zombie costumes can be created from old clothing or clothing purchased from garage sales, thrift, second hand or consignment shops. Red acrylic paint or fake blood can be used to add blood effects on fabric. Use your imagination to add custom touches to your zombie costumes.

  1. Zombie Bride

    • A zombie bride costume can be made with an old wedding dress and veil. Put the dress on and rip the sleeves so they hang in tatters. Use scissors to cut, and then rip, the skirt from the hem up to create a tattered hemline. Zombies are dirty and bloody from lurching, falling and feeding on flesh. Some zombies dig their way out of graves and some are infected with a zombie virus, so decide which zombie you will be to customize your gown. Simulate dirt with soot, brown crayon or paint or actual dirt. Use a sponge to sponge on acrylic paint or fake blood for blood on the gown. Don't buy bright red paint, but instead mix brick red with a little brown to create a dried blood color. 365 Halloween website warns that dried blood tends to dry a pink hue, so you'll need layers of fake blood to create a realistic blood color.

    Zombie Mommy and Baby

    • A zombie mommy and baby can wear "normal" clothes, such as a shirt and shorts, dress or career outfit, bathrobe and nightgown, or any outfit a woman would wear. Rip the sleeves and hems of the clothes if a tattered, "from the grave" look is desired or make the clothing dirty and bloody if an infected zombie look is being aimed for. Purchase an inexpensive wig and splatter it with red acrylic paint. Paint a baby doll with gray latex or spray paint to make the baby into a zombie. Paint "blood" around the mouth with red latex-based paint. A baby bottle filled with red blood (red acrylic paint or red-tinted water) add to the "zombification" of the baby.

    Zombie Nurse

    • Purchase scrubs or a second-hand nurse dress (or nurse costume). Dollar and discount stores sell inexpensive toy doctor kits that include stethoscopes and toy blood pressure cuffs. Dip your hands into reddish-brown acrylic or fabric paint and place your hand print onto the clothing fabric. Pull your hand downward to create a smeared bloody hand print. An inexpensive wig can be messed up and splattered with red acrylic paint. If you have a vintage style paper or fabric nurse hat, pin it to the wig so it looks like it is hanging from your hair. Rip the sleeves and hems of the nurse's uniform. Hold a bloody (paint smeared) stethoscope. Ripped white tights with bloody hand prints are a good zombie costume embellishment.

    Zombie Makeup

    • Zombies are usually gray, pale or blackened and dirty like severely decomposed flesh. The easiest zombie makeup consists of gray grease paint. Smear the gray grease paint over your face. Brown grease paint can be smudged onto your face with cosmetic sponges to simulate dirt streaks. Gray, brown and black eye shadow, eyeliner or brow pencil can be used to color the entire face. Costume stores sells latex and wax special effects, such as torn flesh and facial scars, that can be adhered to the face with cosmetic adhesive. Blackened artificial costume teeth can be purchased at Halloween, party and discount stores.
