What Flavors of Ice Cream Are Most Popular in the United States? thumbnail
Vanilla is number one because it's flavors mix well with many desserts.

In 2009, about 1.52 billion gallons of ice cream were produced according to the International Diary Food Association. Over ninety percent of families in the United States consume ice cream and other related frozen desserts. Ice cream comes in a myriad of flavor offerings, however, the most popular have been around for a long time and are not going anywhere. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Vanilla

    • Vanilla is the most popular flavor of ice cream in the United States, holding just under 30 percent of the market. Vanilla is popular on it's own, but is also an important ingredient or accompaniment in other desserts and treats such as banana splits, milkshakes and pie. The flavor is also very common in mixtures of other ice creams such as French vanilla, which has a stronger vanilla flavoring than traditional vanilla, and vanilla fudge ripple.

    Chocolate

    • Chocolate is the second most popular flavor in the United States, with roughly 10 to 15 percent of the market, depending on the survey. Americans love their chocolate, and chocolate ice cream is no exception. Chocolate is also an ingredient in other popular ice cream flavors such as chocolate chip, mint chocolate chip, chocolate almond and chocolate marshmellow.

    Butter Pecan

    • Butter pecan ice cream is a popular flavor, accounting for between 3 to 5 percent of total ice cream consumption. This places butter pecan in the top five most popular flavors in the United States. The smooth, creamy flavor of the ice cream mixes well with the savory flavors of the pecans in each bite. Pecans are also found in the popular praline pecan flavor of ice cream.

    Strawberry

    • Strawberry ice cream also accounts for between 3 to 5 percent of total ice cream consumption. With vanilla, chocolate and strawberry all being some of the most popular ice cream flavors available, it is no wonder that neapolitan ice cream, which combines all three flavors, is also in the top ten most popular ice cream flavors in the United States.
