Hindu Bridal Hairstyles
Wedding preparations are full of decisions for everyone, especially the bride. For Hindu brides, there are a few basic hairstyles that have been worn for centuries to choose from. One thing that stands out as a distinctive part of a Hindu bridal hairstyle is the way the hair is adorned. The traditional maang tika is a string (maang) of jewels or beads that is attached in the hair and a pendant (tika) that rests on the forehead. Other hair adornments include flowers, sequins, jewel hair pins and combs and strands of pearls. These traditional accessories can be incorporated into a number of different hairstyles.

The Bun
-
At many Indian weddings, the Hindu bride will wear her hair in a traditional bun. This is especially true for weddings that take place in the northern part of the country. To achieve this look, twist your hair together to make a large bun high on the head or back on the crown area. If you have short hair, you may want to use extensions to get the proper effect. After you put your hair in the bun, you should elaborately decorate the bun with an assortment of flowers or jewels.
The Side Bun
-
The side bun is a simple variation of the traditional bun hairdo. Here, you do not place your bun on the top of the head but rather on the side. Sometimes this option is a good one if the groom is shorter than the bride. This is also a very good look if you have well-defined cheekbones and large eyes. When deciding where to place the bun, you also need to consider what kind of outfit you are wearing and whether or not a veil is needed.

Traditional Up-do
-
The traditional up-do is another variation of a bun. Instead of twisting the hair into a bun, sections of the hair are curled and brought up. They are pinned down in the same area so that the curls make a loose shape of a bun. This works well with a bride who has medium-length hair. If your hair is short, then you will need extensions for this look as well. Even with curls, there is still plenty of space for any hair adornment you wish.
Plait
-
The plait is a hairstyle that is used more in the southern areas of India because it is less common for the bride to wear a veil on her head in Southern areas. This leaves all of the head exposed and this allows for any style that the bride chooses. She doesn't have to consider the effect of the veil, like pinning it in, when choosing her hairstyle. For this style, braid your hair into a plait. It can hang down the back or be worn over the shoulder. Flowers are a favorite adornment for this kind of hairdo. The flower strands can decorate any part or all of the braid. They can also hang loosely if you prefer. Of course, with a plait, you can still wear maang tika, pearls, jewels or a tiara.
