Camping
-
Camping is a great outdoor activity for an individual or the whole family. Setting up a tent in a far-off natural location in the woods or by a lake or even in your own backyard will provide fun throughout the night. Creating a bonfire or even lighting an outdoor fireplace will provide just the right camping atmosphere and keep you warm as the temperatures drop. Roast marshmallows to make s'mores for a sweet treat. Star gazing is a great activity to do while camping as well. See if you can identify any constellations like the Big or Little Dipper. Telling ghost stories is another great activity. Keep the stories light and funny if there are smaller children present and you will have a fun night for the whole family.
Scavenger Hunt
-
A scavenger hunt is a great outdoor activity, especially for young children. On a nature scavenger hunt have kids look for leaves, animals, animal tracks, a nest, an animal's home or items with different textures such as rough or smooth objects. A beach scavenger hunt is another fun activity. Look for shells, feathers, driftwood, kelp, sea glass, animals, animal tracks and footprints in the sand. If you live in a city, you can still have a fun scavenger hunt by searching for birds, leaves, grass, puddles, animals and sidewalk cracks.

Arts and Crafts
-
Arts and crafts are fun indoor activities for all ages. Older children, teens and adults will enjoy making a collage out of old magazines and newspapers, creating scrapbook pages for favorite photographs and painting or drawing a still life using household items. Younger children will enjoy arts and crafts activities like making puppets out of paper bags and coloring or painting on construction paper. Another fun idea is to create your own cartoon strip. On a pad of paper draw a figure at the bottom left-hand corner. On the next page, draw the same thing in a slightly different position and slightly to the right of the page. Continue this on as many pages as you like. Fan the pages with your thumb and the figure will appear to move across the page.
Indoor Games
-
Card games and board games are fun to play with one or more partners and are enjoyed by all ages. Having an indoor picnic is another great activity. Spread out a blanket and enjoy a picnic lunch of sandwiches, chips, salad and fresh fruit. For younger kids, games like hide an object, hide and seek, sardines or musical chairs are entertaining and don't require much effort to set up.
