Types of Pens That Are Washable
Washable pens are a type of pen whose writing washes off with water, or water and soap, without leaving behind stains. They are ideal for whiteboards; children's art projects that might get done on tables, floors or walls; and ink that gets on skin. When looking for the best pen for your needs, knowing what is available will make the decision easier.

Watercolor Pens
-
Watercolor pens are a type of pen made with a watercolor-type base similar to watercolor paints. The pens are like fine-tipped markers and are sometimes called school watercolor pens because they are ideal for school-aged children. Like markers or paints, these pens come in several colors and are perfect for a child's art project that might get all over furniture or floors if the child runs it off the paper. They wash off easily with a little water.
Fountain Pens
-
Fountain pens are the pens typically used for fancy writing styles like calligraphy or for classic styles of writing. The inks made for fountain pens are water-based and thus are washable inks. They are not waterproof, though some inks have slight water resistance. The ink comes out of clothing, off paper and off furniture or other items relatively easily, with some soap and water. If paper gets wet or if the ink is touched before it dries, it will smear.

Dry Erase Pens
-
Dry erase pens are the type of marker-like pens designed for whiteboards, laminated calendars or similar items. The pens wash off with either a dry or wet cloth, depending on the specific type. All pens designed for a whiteboard are washable and relatively easy to remove. Usually, this requires nothing more than wiping it off with a cloth. If it gets on clothing, it will wash off in water.
Rollerball Pens
-
Rollerball pens are a type of pen that is similar to a ballpoint pen in appearance but has a water-based ink rather than an oil-based one. The water-based ink is a washable ink that will smudge while wet or if water drips onto the ink. The ink cleans off with some water, though inks made with slight water resistance will require the use of soap as well as water for complete removal.
