Homemade Save the Date Ideas

Save-the-date cards should include the who and when of the event.

Traditionally sent out to announce wedding dates, save-the-date cards can also announce a graduation, holiday or birthday party. These cards give your busy friends and family advanced notice of your celebration, allowing them to adjust their schedules and attend the event. Save money and give the cards a personal touch by making them yourself.

  1. Luggage Tags

    • If you're planning a destination wedding, turn luggage tags into save-the-date cards. Buy luggage tags in the color of your choice. Write the event information on a piece of paper --- or use your computer to type up then print out the information --- and insert the paper into the luggage tag. Put the tags in envelopes and mail them off. You can also use card stock or construction paper to make save-the-date cards that look like luggage tags.

    Bookmarks

    • Send out save-the-date cards that double as bookmarks. Cut card stock or thin cardboard into elongated rectangles. Using calligraphy, write the event information on the bookmark. You can write it horizontally or vertically on the bookmark. Punch a hole in the top of the bookmark and tie a ribbon or two through it. If you have already chosen your wedding colors, use them in the design of your bookmark.

    Postcards

    • Pick up some blank postcards from your local post office and send them out as your save-the-date cards. Use colored pens, stamps or stickers to dress the front of the postcard up and write the important information on the back of the postcard. Or purchase postcards that have photographs of the state or city you're holding your wedding in and send those out as save-the-date cards.

    Magnets

    • Make your own save-the-date magnets to send out to family and friends. Purchase magnetic tape from online retailers, then create your save-the-date cards on card stock, using your computer or by hand. Affix the magnetic tape to the back of the cards and mail them out. To give the magnet save-the-date card a more finished and polished look, laminate the card before attaching the magnetic tape.

    Crossword Puzzle

    • On a piece of card stock, create a crossword that spells out the event's information. If you want to be really creative, write clues that the receiver must figure out to find out the information. Or you can just write the information out in the crossword boxes. Create the crossword by hand or on your computer.
