The Best Ways to Improve Your Creative Writing
Creative writing, like any art, helps those who frequently practice it to improve their minds but it also requires considerable time and effort to master. Those who continually hone their creative writing skills receive a number of benefits, including increased cognitive abilities, better communication skills and improved mental health.
-
Increase Your Vocabulary
-
The English language is full of words that will give your writing more power -- you just need to find them. Author P.D. James calls words "the raw material of our craft" and goes on to say that the larger your vocabulary, the more effective your writing is. Consistently adding new words to your vocabulary allows you to come up with the perfect descriptions in your creative writing, bringing the words to life for the readers.
Use Precise Language
-
Avoid using words with vague, unclear applications. Too many occurrences of basic words in your writing like "run" or "laugh" forces readers to draw their own conclusions. Instead, use precise language that forces the image into their minds and gives them no doubt what your intention is. A villain character who laughs should instead jeer or sneer to fully demonstrate his evil personality. Likewise, instead of walk, a character with an attitude might strut or swagger while a timid character might shuffle or amble. These descriptions give your characters and settings added realism and meaning.

Keep a Journal
-
Get in the daily habit of jotting down your thoughts of even the most mundane aspects of your life. Your basic feelings and emotions are the source your creativity stems from. The more effectively you tap into them, the more effective your creative writing will be. By writing about your own life and experiences, you might develop new ideas and insights about a creative project, and you give yourself much needed writing practice in a low-pressure environment so your true self comes out.
Be Open-Minded
-
A writer has the ability to use any experience in life, however pleasant or unpleasant, as a means to generate ideas for creative writing. The best inspiration for writing might in fact come from your own life if you make a point to constantly try new things and approach every unfamiliar situation like it's an opportunity for adventure. Meet new people, learn new hobbies and visit obscure places. You never know how it might benefit you in your writing later.
