Major Events in World History That Happened on July 10, 1995
1995 was a momentous year with the end of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, the advent of DVD as a format and the busiest hurricane season in 62 years. While the year as a whole was packed with event and incident, each day is also worthy of examination in its own right.

Serbian Takeover of Srebrenica 6th-11th July

The Serbian conflict came to a head in the town of Srebrenica, occupied by Serb forces from the 6th of July. The 10th was particularly tense with Dutch UNPROFOR troops firing warning shots over the Serbian troops' heads, culminating in tanks being bombed by NATO planes. Plans to continue these air strikes had to be abandoned when the Serb Army not only threatened to kill Dutch troops but shelled the UN Potocari compound on the outside of the town and surrounding areas, where 20,000 to 30,000 civilians had fled.
Aung San Suu Kyi is Released From Prison

A Burmese opposition politician, Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest on several occasions by the sitting government. This process culminated in her final release from her increasingly dilapidated house on Nov. 13, 2010, but one such period of captivity finished on July 10,1995. By the time of her final release, Suu Kyi had spent 15 of the last 21 years under house arrest.

Chicago Heat Wave

Unprecedented temperatures in Chicago in July led to what the press have referred to as the "Chicago Heat Wave Disaster." While the temperature would reach record heights from July 12 to July 16, the temperature was already rising significantly on the 10th and both the temperature and humidity would increase significantly over the next few days. While the final death toll has never been determined, Chicago registered 739 more deaths that week than the national average.
Galileo Space Probe Releases Atmospheric Probe

The Galileo mission to Jupiter reached a pivotal stage on July 10. Galileo was a two-stage spacecraft, an orbiter and a probe released to enter Jupiter's atmosphere, survive re-entry and descend by parachute before being crushed by atmospheric pressure. The probe was moved onto a trajectory which would lead to its descent into the atmosphere on July 10, 1995.
