Combat and war have been the focus of games through history. Classic games like chess and checkers simplify the conflicts, but modern computer games have the ability to display realistic depictions of wars, real or fictional. The games that offer a historical perspective on war can offer alternate viewpoints and provide players with a sense of how real military campaigns were enacted.

Set during the military campaigns of World War II, "Company of Heroes: Online" is a sequel to the "Company of Heroes" real-time strategy game. Players are given control of a variety of military units as either an Axis or Allies commander and directed to capture objectives to defeat enemy forces. This version of the game is free to download and play, offering competitive and co-operative online multiplayer options for up to eight players at a time.
Empire Earth II

"Empire Earth II" is a real-time strategy game that lets players route an alternate course through history as they control 14 separate civilizations in a bid for world domination. The game's core mechanic allows the players to take their civilization from the stone age to the space age, visiting hallmark periods of human history in the process. In addition to traditional combat, players can forge allies and stifle development through an in-game economy that allows trade between civilizations.

Age of Empires 3

Created by Ensemble Studios and released by Microsoft Game Studios, "Age of Empires 3" is a real-time strategy game that puts players in control of real-world European civilizations as they vie for control of the newly discovered North American territory. Featuring British, French and Spanish military campaigns along with a Native American storyline, the game boasts a wide spectrum of viewpoints during the colonial era. Two expansion packs were released for the game, with the first including a more robust Native American campaign while the second showcased the Asian dynasties.
Shogun 2: Total War

Set in ancient Japan, "Shogun 2: Total War" gives players the opportunity to control one of nine real-world medieval Japanese clans and wage war for control of the island nation. The game is turn-based during the military planning sections, allowing players to strategically place armies on the map, but when conflict occurs the game switches to a real-time strategy game that allows players to take direct control of their military forces.
