Choose comfortable clothing, even for formal occassions.

You have a big event to go to, such as a wedding, red carpet premier or swanky party. If you're not used to dressing formally, navigating this fashion world can seem like trying to make your way through a landmine. So many rules apply, but you don't know what they are or how they pertain to you. Relax -- the good news is you're supposed to enjoy the event first, and think about clothing second. With that in mind, a few simple tips will set you on the right fashion path. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Shoes

    • So much focus often goes into the dress or suit you'll be wearing that ideas about shoes often get left by the wayside. The most important thing about footwear, along with being appropriate for the occasion, is that it be comfortable. Remember that you will be walking (and possibly dancing) all night in these shoes. If they are even a little too tight or rub your feet the wrong way, you may be in severe pain when you go home, possibly for days.

    Body Types

    • Often, overweight people dread formal occasions; few designers make clothing with their body type in mind. Don't make the mistake of wearing loose or baggy clothing to hide your shape. This will only make you look larger. Gentlemen should go to a skilled tailor to have their suit custom-made, if necessary, to fit their figure. Ladies can use foundation garments, often made of stretchy spandex, to form a more hourglass silhouette. These women should still wear fitted (but not tight) gowns that show off their curves.

    Pregnancy

    • Just because you're expecting an addition to the family doesn't mean you can't look glamorous in formal wear. Long gone are the days when a pregnant woman hid her baby bump. However, it's understandable if you don't want to wear tight clothing over it. For formal occasions, chose an empire waist gown that drapes over your bump. Choose one with a seam just below your breasts, to give them additional support.

    Extras

    • Don't forget accessories when it comes to formal fashion; nothing looks worse than a great gown with mediocre makeup and jewelry. Have a professional stylist help with your face and hair, if needed. Keep makeup simple and understated for daytime functions. If the formal occasion is at night, it's okay to go more dramatic, using smoky eyes, for example. Regardless of the event's time of day, wear one or two statement jewelry pieces and keep the rest simple. Just because the occasion is formal doesn't mean you should overdo it with "bling."
