Challenges of Poor Team Communication

Team communication builds closer working relationships.

In business, you want work teams to communicate effectively so everyone gets the same message and teammates are on the same page in terms of what needs to get done. Poor team communication breaks down the smooth flow of information, causing people to lose track, become confused and not work as effectively together, according to Mind Tools. Such challenges cause employers to stress the importance of team communication to maintain a successful atmosphere.

  1. Meeting Goals

    • It's challenging to meet project goals when team communication has broken down. In projects, team members usually split up the work so each person is responsible for his own piece of the project puzzle. Effective communication among team members allows teams to work together and maintain a unified vision so they reach the end objective. Poor communication, on the other hand, impacts the team's ability to stay on top of goals. They lose sight of the individual tasks, don't check in with one another and, as a result, goals may not be met with as much quality or efficiency.

    Team Trust

    • Poor team communication causes trust issues among members. When teams don't communicate, members become self-reliant and take on an individualistic approach to work. This mindset is disadvantageous to the concept of working in teams, according to Time-Management-Guide.com. Strong team communication helps teams maintain a trusting bond. Without that communication, however, teammates may not feel like they can trust or rely on others. In response, a drifting between team members occurs.

    Misinformation

    • Misinformation is a challenge within team communication. An effective communicator says what's on his mind in a way that makes the listeners hear the same message. Poor communicators, however, have difficulty communicating what they mean to say, so other people on the team end up hearing different messages, "HR Magazine" reports. In the end, the varying messages can be categorized as misinformation. If two people on a team heard one thing from their leader, and two other people on the team heard the leader say something totally different, the team is unlikely to be successful. If teams aren't on the same page, it's challenging for them to accomplish what needs to get done.

    Problem Solving

    • A team that communicates poorly is unable to solve work-related issues. Problem solving is an integral part of work projects and assignment. Many times, teams are required to reach conclusions and decisions to resolve an issue. However, if the team doesn't communicate effectively, team members remain stagnant and unable to resolve any problems they encounter. This is a negative impact on productivity and profitability. The longer problems go unresolved, the more it costs companies in terms of money and wasted time.
