Moving can be a stressful and disruptive event, but hiring the right moving company can keep these things to a minimum. Knowing that your belongings are in the hands of experienced professionals can put your mind more at ease as you make the transition between homes.
Where Are You Going?
Your destination will affect which company you choose to hire. Some companies specialize in short hauls, while others will take your belongings across the continent. Find the company that has experience with the kind of move you are making.
What Do You Need?
Don't spend extra money paying a company to move things you don't need. Just before a move is the ideal time to have a big yard sale and get rid of extra stuff.
What's the Cost?
Cost is a primary factor in most decisions about which moving company to hire. Get a number of estimates from different companies before deciding. Be wary of the lowest estimate; saving money isn't worth it if the movers are incompetent.
Does the Company Have Insurance?
Don't be shy about asking questions regarding the company's insurance. Mistakes can happen, and if some of your belongings are lost or damaged, you want to be sure that you will be compensated accordingly.
Are There Extra Fees?
Some companies charge extra fees above the original cost. These can be for having to move things up or down stairs or into a place that the truck can't reach properly. Be sure you understand any extra fees before hiring the company.
Does the Company Have References?
Ask the company's representative if you could have the names of some previous customers. This isn't necessarily reliable, since the company will obviously not give you the names of dissatisfied customers, but it may help you to learn more about them.
How Do They Pack?
Ask some questions about how things are packed. This may be more or less important to you depending on the fragility and value of your possessions. If you own priceless vases, you need to be sure they will be safely protected.
Are They Fast?
Get an idea of how long it will take to get your belongings from one point to the other. If you are moving across the country, you need to be sure that it won't take weeks for your possessions to rejoin you.
Do They Offer Discounts?
Some companies may offer you a discount if you are willing to move during one of their less busy periods. If you are flexible about when you make your move, this can be a good way to save some money.
How Busy Are They?
Find out how busy the company is when you first call them. If they are very busy, that's probably a good sign, but may also impede your ability to hire them when you need them.
