Differences Between Tempur-Pedic & Sealy Posturepedic

Tempur-Pedic International, a manufacturer of memory foam mattresses, first offered its Space Age product to the American public in 1992. Using research derived from NASA's space program that was aimed at cushioning the astronaut's seats and increasing their rates of survival in case of an accident, the product evolved into mattresses and pillows that promised support under all parts of the body. Sealy Corporation, manufacturer of a range of mattresses, claims their Posturepedic mattresses support your back and provide body alignment. The Posturepedic mattress is not foam; instead, it's constructed with innersprings. Tempur-Pedic and Sealy merged in 2012, but the two companies are independently operated.

Memory Foam Primer

Imagine lying on a mattress and having all the curves and crevices between your body and the mattress supported: That's what memory foam claims to do. Your head, shoulders, hips, knees and even your feet have full support underneath, and your spine is kept in its proper alignment. When you move, the memory foam moves as well. With the merger of Tempur-Pedic with Sealy, it was expected that the two lines would share technology. At the time of publication, Tempur-Pedic offers a memory foam mattress with a layer of coils.

Sealy Posturepedic Mattresses

A Sealy Posturepedic mattress boasts of having a fabric, foam and coil construction, all working together to give your back full support and your body the alignment it needs for a good night's sleep. Sealy produces three types of Posturepedic mattresses: the original coil construction, the Posturepedic Plus, which utilizes cushioned coils and gel memory foam, and the Hybrid, which combines equal amounts of coil and foam construction.

Tempur-Pedic Pros and Cons

Memory foam mattress don't sag, which means you don't have to flip and turn them as part of your household maintenance. This is a good thing since memory foam is extremely heavy and unforgiving. Keep this in mind when moving the mattress, especially up and down stairs. Because of the density of the foam, body movement during sleep is more difficult. The upside is that when your bed partner moves, you don't feel the ripple effect. Some users have reported that the foam produces an odor, called off-gassing, which is difficult to suppress. If you live in a warm climate, you may want to rethink owning a memory foam mattress --- it's considerably warmer than a coil mattress. Historically, Tempur-Pedic mattresses are more costly than their memory foam counterparts; however, they do offer a 10-year full warranty and a further 15 years pro-rated.

Sealy Posturepedic Pros and Cons

Because Sealy, like all other mattress manufacturers, changes the names of their mattress styles and construction from distributor to distributor, it's difficult to compare the specific models. The original innerspring mattress, upon which they built their name, stood for quality, especially since the introduction of the Posturepedic lines. This line was designed for extra body support, and it had more sleeping area because of its firm edges. The entire line is available in a variety of firmness levels. It's recommended that those who carry larger-than-normal body weight look for an innerspring that offers greater density of coils. Innersprings do not produce offensive gasses, and they're also cooler than memory foam, which is a consideration when shopping the Posturepedic Gel and Hybrid lines.

    • Pillow-top mattresses produce more heat than a flat mattress.
    • Lesser expensive innerspring mattresses sag more easily than the more expensive lines.
