A family portrait can hang on the wall, or be sent as a Christmas card.

Family portraits are a great tradition. Once a year, or every few years, the family gets all dressed up and posses for a professional portrait, but lots of planning must go in to a portrait before the camera lens is trained on the family. For instance will the photograph be taken inside or outside? Will the family be posing casually or formally? It all boils down to what will the family wear during their big day.

  1. Earth Tones

    • Earth tones are preferred in both indoor and outdoor photography shoots. Colors in the earth tones palette include browns, tans, grays, greens, oranges, whites and some reds. Members of the family do not have to wear matching tops as long as they choose colors in the same color family. Earth tones provide a lot of choices and look good on any skin color.

    Dark Colors

    • Dark colors work best indoors, but depending on the family skin tone, dark colors can also wash out skin color, making everyone in the family look like vampires. Dark colors tend to be slimming and will also direct the viewers' eye to the faces in the photograph. Dark colors work best on families with older children, families with younger children should dress the young children in bright colors to make them more vibrant.

    Standard Black or White

    • Standard black or white is a great route to go if the family wants a formal photograph, especially one with matching outfits. Most everyone owns either a black or white shirt and the shirts can be paired with either khakis or black pants for an even more formal look to the photography shoot. Black is very slimming but white will look nice on darker complexions.

    What to Avoid

    • Bold patterns can be a big mistake, not only can it be hard to match the rest of the family to a bold pattern, the pattern can also be distracting in the final shot. Avoid wearing short skirts or shorts and tank tops because having all that skin exposed can distract from the faces. Also avoid fad and trendy clothing to keep the photograph timeless and avoid a possible embarrassing situation.
