What Is a Container for Cut Flowers?
Cut flowers in an arrangement require a container that holds an ample supply of water to keep the flowers fresh. Flowers in transit are not usually shipped in water because of the weight the water adds to the shipping cost. The flowers are wrapped and shipped in boxes that retain moisture but are not filled with water. Does this Spark an idea?

Boxes
-
Flowers imported into the United States have been hydrated and are shipped in boxes without water. The exceptions are some varieties of orchids. The boxes contain packing material to absorb shock and keep the flowers from bruising each other, as well as prevent the moisture from seeping outside the box. Some florists deliver flowers, most commonly roses, in gift boxes.
Bucket
-
Flowers in the grocery store are placed in buckets of water after they've been removed from their delivery boxes. Light and warmth cause the flowers to require hydration again after the darkness and coolness of delivery. Local flower growers may deliver the flowers in buckets of water. Farmers market flowers are sold from buckets of water. When cutting flowers from your own garden, immediately put them into a bucket of water as you cut them.

Vases
-
Vases made expressly for flowers come in many shapes and forms from the single bud vase to vases big enough to hold dozens of roses. They're made of glass, plastic and metal. Any container that is watertight and won't leach chemicals into the water could be used for a vase, including pitchers, tea and coffee pots, cups, wine glasses and candle holders.
Decorative Containers
-
Floral designers don't depend on vases for their many styles of arrangements. They use containers that are not waterproof, such as baskets, by lining them with sphagnum moss, a layer of plastic and then stuffing with wet floral foam. The floral foam keeps the flowers hydrated, the plastic keeps the water from wetting the space where the arrangement is placed and the sphagnum moss hides the plastic. Designers sometimes tape floral foam to a shallow tray, arrange the flowers in the foam and place the foam in a decorative container.
