Get creative with your teen's loft bed and the space around it.

Loft beds work well in a teen's room for several reasons. First, teens love sleeping up high, and second, they love the cool look a loft bed gives their room. Loft beds are handy, too, since they free up floor space by raising the sleeping surface close to the ceiling. But you need to determine what to do with all that extra room. You have many options, including creating a reading nook, gamers' lounge, extra closet space and more. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Reading Nook

    • Encourage your teen's interest in reading by setting up a cozy reading nook under her loft bed. Start with pretty sheets or curtains hung all the way around the outside for a cozy, tent-like feel. Add a soft, faux-fur throw rug or two on the floor, a small bookshelf, a beanbag chair, small foam couch or floor pillows and a clip-on gooseneck lamp. Let your teen pick the color palette, or coordinate it with her bedroom decor.

    Gamers' Lounge

    • If your daughter loves video games, set up her console under the loft bed. Organize everything into a rolling gaming cart, including the gaming console, remotes, games and accessories. Throw down a colorful rug, and add a couple of video rockers for the ultimate place to get her game on.

    Secluded Study Space

    • Help your daughter's grades out with a quiet, secluded spot to study. Start with curtain panels all around to block out distractions. Underneath the loft bed, add a small desk, comfy chair, task lamp, computer setup, memo board and a nook for paper and school supplies.

    Clothes Closet

    • If your daughter is a fashionista with more clothes than closet space, you can turn the space under the bed into a closet. Arrange rolling racks in the space, or hang sturdy rods for clothing. Cover wall space with a series of hooks for hanging scarves, belts and purses. If there's room, tuck a small dresser in as well. Because closets tend to get messy, hide the clutter by hanging a pretty curtain around the outside in a fabric that matches her room.

    Guest Room

    • If your daughter has tons of friends to sleep over, place a twin mattress or futon under her loft bed. Set it up to coordinate with her existing bedding and bedroom decor. Add a bedside table, lamp and an alarm clock, and you're good to go for guests, which gives your daughter an extra sleeping option as well.
