The United States military is a large federal- and state-controlled organization that includes thousands of members and support personnel. Military bases are a key component in a functioning military. Active duty members and their families, including rear area support logistics, are housed on military bases. The components of military bases for the United States military are uniform across the different military branches and provide the needs required by U.S. military personnel.

  1. Headquarters

    • Every military installation has a building known as the headquarters. Depending on the size of the base the headquarters may be at a company, battallion or division level. Orders pass through headquarters before being distributed to individual soldiers by their platoon leaders and sergeants. Military records and promotions and awards that are recommended must first be approved by the commanding officer at headquarters.

    Mess Hall

    • Every U.S. military installation has a functioning mess hall where soldiers eat their daily meals. The soldier will sign at the check-in point at the entrance of the mess hall and proceed to the chow line. Chow-line meals are served buffet style where the soldier can choose between different main courses, side dishes and desserts. Fountain drinks in addition to dairy products such as milk and ice cream are also made available.

    Places of Worship

    • United States military personnel follow or espouse to a variety of different religious beliefs. Religious services are available for the religions that are recognized by the U.S. military, including the various forms of Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Services are held according to each religion's customs. Counseling services are also available to soldiers and their families by chaplains.

    The PX

    • The Post Exchange (PX) is the main shopping center for military personnel on a base. The PX offers general goods such as electronics, clothing and household appliances. Foodstuffs are also available to soldiers and their families. Only active members of the military, their families or retired personnel may purchase goods at the PX. At U.S.military bases in foreign countries taxes are not paid on goods purchased at the PX.

    Military Housing

    • Military housing exists on most bases for soldiers and their families. Single soldiers are housed in barracks, which are multiple sleeping units located in one building, similar to an apartment complex. The barracks also have a day room where a television and vending machines are available in addition to a restroom and shower area, which are available to all. Married personnel are housed in family units at no cost to the soldier and his family.

    Motor Pool

    • The motor pool is where military vehicles are kept and maintained. Humvees, trucks and other vehicles are repaired by mechanics in the motor pool, and a filling station is usually present to top off vehicles with fuel.
