As a business owner there are times you may be out of your league when it comes to operating your company. Many business owners in this position will consider hiring a consultant to come in and assist them with their company. Though there are advantages to an outside consultant, there are disadvantages as well that every business owner should consider first.

  1. Advantage: Expertise

    • A consultant is an expert in their field. As a business owner you may hire a consultant for things such as finance, marketing or business operations. These individuals are educated extensively in these fields and are specially trained to help businesses in their specific field.

    Advantage: As Needed Basis

    • A consultant provides a company with flexibility they cannot have with regular employees. Consultants can be hired and fired on an as needed basis without the concern of going through proper human resource procedures.

    Advantage: Save on Taxes

    • Unlike a regular employee, a company does not have to pay payroll taxes or provide benefits to an outside consultant. This is because they are not considered a regular employee.

    Advantage: Outside Perspective

    • A consultant will bring in an outside perspective to the business unlike a regular employee. Since he will have no personal ties to the company he can separate emotion from the overall business.

    Disadvantage: Cost

    • When it comes to disadvantages, cost is certainly one. Most consultants come at a high price and that means that your company will first have to be able to afford their higher fees to retain their services.

    Disadvantage: Lack of Company Knowledge

    • Unlike the usual employees and yourself, a consultant will have no personal knowledge or relationship with your business. She may be unaware of operating procedures that are in place or not fully understand the type of business you are operating.

    Disadvantage: Quality

    • When hiring a consultant you are basically hiring a stranger. With that it means that your company will have no prior knowledge of this person's expertise except based on the credentials they provide to you. Your company may run the risk of paying an individual that does not provide results for your company or the results you were hoping by retaining their services.
